Major/Afo Assignment

Submerged Still Life
18x24
Gouache
~
Assigned to pursue an assignment given to first year students of our potential major. Getting this mock assignment by contacting a current upperclassman, giving me a great opportunity to talk with someone whom has first hand knowledge in what the next few years of my educational career in the Painting/Printmaking department will look a little something like. The assignment given to me was to paint a still life from direct observation and then place it in a made-up atmosphere. This challenges the artist in creating a believable composition by enforcing the consciousness of how the atmosphere will affect the objects included in the still life.
I chose to create a narrative still life, placing this set-up underwater to fulfill the given assignment's requirements. What challenged me the most was using my limited skills and knowledge in creating a compelling submerged scene that acts upon the featured dry objects.
Added onto this assignment is two more requirements. 1) to use a material that I have not yet used before and 2) to tackle this assignment in an AFO way.
I chose to take this opportunity to experiment with gouache and to create an AFO-like piece I chose to add audio to my painting. I looked at what we've been learning in class, how composition and color enhances a piece, and I wanted to see how adding audio would enhance or even chance the effect of the final piece. I accomplished this by playing deep ocean sounds through a hidden speaker behind the canvas.
